After environmentalists’, politicians’ and Al Gore’s call to action, it’s nowordinary people’s turn to act, as the people who have been interviewed made it clear to us.
First, we interviewed young people, who are « maybe more concerned and aware of global warming » as Athina said, because some of them do environmental studies and they have been informed since elementary school about solutions against climate change and to protect the environment. We met (in person or with skype) :
Athina, a physics student who wants to work with, oceans/renewable energies
Salvio, the former English assistant in our high school.
Clara who is an English assistant from Kansas, US.
In a lot of countries different solutions are used to fight climate change. Thus, in their countries they try to use solar panels, wind turbines and renewable energies.
They are particularly careful to reduce global warming and to protect the environment : they turn off the light when they leave a room, they recycle, they walk, use bicycle and public transports a lot, clean up some trash on beaches, plant trees, they don’t use trucks or four-wheel-drive and they take short showers. Moreover, as Clara said : « We have to be more careful about what we throw away ».
They generally agree to say that the policies which are implemented in France are pretty good and better than in the US. Indeed, in the US, there are different opinions and the rules vary from one state to another. In California, for example, (where Athina lived), a lot of renewable energies are used. Not long ago, wildfires broke out in California, so we asked Athina and Salvio if they personally felt concerned about this problem.
ATHINA : – « It’s a big issue and they are very dangerous, they have a great impact on nature, they start because of a lot of dead leaves and because of global warming. Of course I feel a bit concerned because I have friends who live there and they had to be evacuated because of wildfires. Fortunately, I could call them and they were fine. »
As for Salvio, he does not really feel concerned about what happened in California because it is about 1,000 miles away and he does not know anyone there.
As regards global warming, here is what they said :
According to Athina, this is a big issue which affects the world ; in her opinion, it is not just global warming, it is also a question of climate change because in Ireland, for example, temperatures are getting colder.
Clara thinks that global warming is a serious problem, « that’s going to be even more huge in the future if we do nothing », it will be worse in the future and there are already some effects like natural disasters.
Salvio added that it’s something that people should consider as it is real, and not a joke at all as Donald Trump may think. Indeed, the latter doesn’t care about scientists’ conclusions. He doesn’t want to accept the idea of global warming, it is not a good enough business for him.
Let’s end with some quotes of the interviewees :
ATHINA : – « The choices we make now will have such an important impact on the future that it is urgent to act »
CLARA : – « People need to act and realize that every little action can be important to support the environment »
SALVIO (about what we can do to stop global warming) :
– « It’s difficult to do things but together, we can stop it »
We know that global worming causes a lot of damage to the earth. We asked English speaking peoples some questions in order to find some solutions against global warming.
Athina, a girl from California who studies physics, says that global warming is a problem in California because it causes drought and hurricanes. She also says that Donald Trump doesn’t want to fight against wildfires because he thinks that global worming isn’t a problem. She says that California used to try to control wildfires. She told us that one day there were two storms in two weeks.
Salvio, a boy from Florida says that hurricanes are not trigged by humans activities but there are more and more of them. For him we’re responsible but we have to care about earth. He told us that we are responsible for the melting of ice cap. For him, the United States uses to few renewables energies so it increases climates change.
For us, climates change, the melting ice cap, hurricanes, earthquakes and all the natural disasters are in part caused by humans activities and the consumption of oil and gaz. You can change that by turning off the light when you leave a room. We have to care about the earth because today we can go to the moon and we want to walk on Mars, but, we mustn’t forget that the earth is our real home.
This week, we interviewed some people about the problem of environment and global warming. We met one of them in the class and the others in Skype, via webcam. We asked them some questions about their opinion and the solutions they could propose to arrange the problem.
We spoke to Athina, a girl from California who had some experiences with the natural catastrophes, like wildfires, where she lived. She described all the catastrophes which happened in California : hurricanes, droughts … Caused by human activity. She explained that in just two weeks, two storms happened in Dublin, Ireland. Athina is against Donald Trump’s policy ; she thinks that he is not aware of the danger of global warming.
We spoke to Salvio too, an italian boy who lives in Florida . He thinks that natural disasters got worse because of global warming. But he is totally against the using of renewables energy in the United States. For him, It causes climate changes and natural catastrophes.
He give us some advice to protect environment ; for exemple, turn off the lights when we leave the house ;be careful with our consumption of water …
In the class, we also met a couple of british people who live in Scotland. They spoke about their life and their interest about the environment. They mentionned all the national parks that they visited ( The Everglades, Joshua Tree … ) They also spoke about the problem of global warming which makes the climate change.
Like Athina, they don’t have snow often in winter ( even If Athina had a lot of snow in Ireland before the holidays, because the climate is changing It’s cold because of the golf stream)
To finish, we spoke to the english teacher, Clara and we asked her what she thinks about Global Warming. She explained to us that It’s a problem of human activity and that we need to pay attention. She also spoke about the national parks that she visited, and we realized that she has been a lot of times to national parks.
We have interviewed people about their opinions about global warming, here are their answers to our questions.
They are from different regions, like Scotland, England, Kansas, California and Florida, so their climates are different.
The first person who was interviewed is Clara, she’s from Kansas, she answered us : she thinks global warming is a big problem. Against global warming, Clara walks and uses public transports, she thinks Donald Trump is not qualified to be a president, his policies are bad for the environment and he thinks that global warming doesn’t exist. Clara says that the effects of climate change are natural disasters, in her country, she had hurricanes past summer and the snow is getting harder.
The second person is Athina, she’s from California and she thinks natural disasters are not the consequences of climate change but are increased by global warming, but she thinks the consequences are melting of ice and changing temperatures, snow, a lot of damage, CO2, greenhouse effect. Against global warming, Athina recycles and uses renewable bags. Like Clara, she thinks that Donald Trump must believe in global warming.
Janette and Tony are from Scotland and England, they think global warming has an impact and it’s a problem. They recycle a lot, reduce their consumption, they think the effects are more floods, rising sea level and the sea eroding the land and warmer weather.
Salvio is from Florida and thinks that the impact of global warming is deep, the effects of climate change for Salvio are rising temperatures and wildfires, colder winters. Salvio doesn’t agree with Donald Trump’s ideas, against global warming, he recycles, take showers and not baths but it’s not easy.
So the 5 persons have differents opinions but they all think that global warming is bad and people should fight against it.
Global warming is a serious problem nowadays, and since we started studying this subject we’ve realised it was really important to try to do our best to reduce it. Still, some politicians, like Donald Trump, deny it. We’ve interviewed people of different ages and from different countries but they all have the same opinion about this problem.
Clara and Athina both strongly disagree with Donald Trump’s policies. In their opinion, withdrawing from the Paris agreement was a huge mistake but they know nothing will be done while he’s still president. Indeed, that decision, and choosing to reduce the size of national parks in Utah will have serious consequences in the future.
Athina and Salvio already have felt the impact of global warming on natural disasters. Back when she was a child, Athina had to leave her home twice, because of wildfires near her home, in California. She believes it’s due to the rising temperatures, it causes the soil to become drier. Moreover, she thinks hurricanes have always existed but they’ve become stronger because of global warming. It doesn’t only causes droughts, Ireland has more snow now than a century ago and that’s also due to climate change. At the contrary, in Florida, where Salvio lives, one year they had so hot temperatures in December that he could wear shorts and shirts without sleeves.
Athina told us that the richer states of U.S.A that want to fight against global warming can make environmental policies like California whereas small states without much money can’t afford this. But there are some organizations who’re charged of cleaning wastes in the ocean or fighting against deforestation. But some states also agree with Donald Trump and believe that protecting the environment would destroy the economy and many people would lose their jobs. They prefer to use natural gases and coal than renewable energies. For example, in Florida, people could install solar panels.
On a smaller scale, Clara thinks we should use more public transports, bikes or walk instead of driving to reduce our carbon footprint. Moreover she thinks recycling helps to decrease global warming too. Athina recycles too, and she uses renewable bags. She also used to participate in beach cleaning when she lived in California. Finally, Salvio believes people should try to do more car pooling , and stop driving SUV.
